December 2023 ✨ The Faris Foundation Quarterly

Season’s Greetings from The Faris Foundation!

Thank you for your continued partnership in our mission to bring brighter days and better treatments to children with cancer. We are thrilled to share with you some recent updates, as well as upcoming initiatives and opportunities to get involved.

Fall/Winter 2023 Updates

CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH

The Faris Foundation is a proud partner in the new Helping Osteosarcoma Patients Everywhere (HOPE) Super Grant, a $1.5 million research grant awarded to a team at New York Medical College, to develop novel combinatorial immunotherapy that will significantly increase the overall survival in children and adolescents with relapsed osteosarcoma.

CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH

Last year, The Faris Foundation granted $750,000 to physician scientists at Texas Children’s Cancer Center to launch a clinical trial studying the effectiveness of a cellular immunotherapy to treat patients with diffuse midline glioma (DMG) brain tumors. We are honored to share with you the impact of this research through the story of Nadia, a pre-teen benefitting from the clinical trial.

ART IS MY LIFE

After opening earlier this year, The Faris Foundation Art Studio at Texas Children’s Cancer Center has become a treasured space for pediatric cancer patients and their families to make art, be inspired, and connect with each other. Check out this video featuring one young artist at work in the studio!

ART IS MY LIFE

We teamed up with our friends at A Kid Again to create a music therapy-inspired Adventure In A Box for kids with life-threatening conditions. Melissa Melo, The Faris Foundation Music Therapist at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, created a magical musical adventure that was delivered to families nationwide and our hospital partners this fall. Watch the video to experience the magic for yourself!

LET THERE BE GOLD

Our signature GOLD celebrations were back in full swing this September, with events at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Houston, and Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York City. This year we expanded our celebrations with special “Let There Be GOLD” kits sent to our Good JuJu families! We were also honored to receive a proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner recognizing September 2023 as “Let There Be GOLD Month” in the City of Houston!

LET THERE BE GOLD

Our third annual “Threads of Gold” Gallery Night in October was a glittering success, with over 500 people in attendance at Asia Society Texas Center to view 300+ works of art by HISD student artists! Select works are now on display (through 1/25/24) at Houston City Hall, in a show curated by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Office of Council Member Letitia Plummer, as a part of City Hall’s EXPRESSIONS! exhibition series.

LET THERE BE GOLD

Our partners are GOLDEN! We are grateful to businesses like Prime Communications and Wendy’s Houston Co-op for shining their light to bring brighter days and better treatments to children with cancer. Thanks to these partners, The Faris Foundation had a golden presence in over 2,200 retail and restaurant locations nationwide, and raised over $250,000 through in-store fundraising campaigns!

GOOD JUJU

We’ve sent over 200 Good JuJu Care Packages this year! Here’s a testimonial from the family of one recent recipient: “I don’t even know what words to use to fully describe everything you all have sent to Matthew. We are speechless and we have shed so many tears. It’s not just about the gifts but it’s about your thoughtfulness as an organization being able to provide this indescribable feeling of joy to our home and for our son.”

BRIGHTER DAYS GOLF CLASSIC

Thank you to our sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and partners for helping us raise $875,000 and making the 3rd Annual Faris Foundation Brighter Days Golf Classic an “awesome possum day,” as Faris would say! We are especially grateful to our guest speaker Melissa Melo, The Faris Foundation Music Therapist at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, and to our program emcees, Brooke and Iain Sharpe. Congratulations to this year’s Gold Jacket winners, the Urban Armor Gear team!

GOOD JUJU

This fall saw the first Good JuJu Wrap Party outside the Houston area (in Long Island!). See below if you’d like to bring brighter days to children with cancer by hosting your own Good JuJu Party in 2024!

Signing off with a Twinkling Thought

“Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness.”
